House Bill 1596 Introduced to Amend Act 57, the Interpreter Registration Act

House Bill 1596 (HB 1596) has been introduced by Representative Eachus. The HB will amend Act 57, the Interpreter Registration Act, to allow students who graduate from an ITP to work in PA, if they satisfy the criteria listed in the bill.

In Summary, the Bill proposes

1. An interpreter who graduates from an ITP with an Associates Degree of Higher can obtain a provisional registration, and MUST apply within 5 years from date of graduation to obtain state registration.

2. To obtain a provisional registration, the applicant must do the following:

* complete the application

* pay the required fees. It will be $100.00 unless modified via regulations

* provide proof that she/he graduated from an ITP with an associate degree or higher

* must be 18 yrs of age or older

* satisfy other criteria that the Office for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing may establish in regulation

* only issued to those who graduated from at ITP within 5 years of the time of registering for a provisional registration.

3. If granted provisional registration:

* the registration will be valid for no more than 2 years

* provisional registration can be renewed, by following the above criteria

4. HB will become effective 60 days after it becomes law.
