Credential of Competency for Paraeducators--Standard 1: Foundations of Special Education
October 23, 2007, -4:15-6:15 PM -- A Special Education Paraeducator Afterschool Videoconference-- PaTTAN -King of Prussia, PaTTAN- Pittsburgh, and PaTTAN - Harrisburg and other videoconference sites across the state. This is the first presentation in a videoconference series designed specifically to help paraeducators build the knowledge and skills needed to obtain the Special Education Paraeducator Credential of Competency, available through the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education. Content for the two-year series will be aligned to the ten performance standards listed in the Special Education Paraeducator Standards for Practice: Competency Assessment Checklist. Each session will concentrate on one standard. The first session focuses on the skill and knowledge areas of Standard #1: Foundations of Special Education. These skill and knowledge areas are: K1 Purposes of programs for individuals with exceptional learning needs. K2 Basic educational terminology regarding students, programs, roles and instructional activities. Attending this videoconference will provide participants with information on these two knowledge areas and allow them to achieve these two areas on their Competency Checklist. Mini Course Series on Disabilities Presenting New Approaches for Promising Practices by Institute on Disabilities at Temple University
November 8-9, 2007 --Expanding Our Reach - Maximizing the Potential -- Transitioning to Employment Using Assistive Technology Speaker: Michael Lawler Senior Rehabilitation Specialist and Instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout
This mini course will present an overview of a model for comprehensive assessment of an individual's abilities and disabilities to determine needed assistive technology and job accommodations. Used in the state of Wisconsin, this model can be adapted for use in other states. The model is designed to maximize the potential of the consumer by identifying and providing assistive technology and other job accommodations as early as possible in the service process. Lawler will use case studies to illustrate how services are offered and demonstrate how the model is applied. The case examples will also illustrate how the needs of individuals with disabilities, and other key individuals such as family members, case workers, employers, and co-workers, are addressed. A Good Start is Not Enough: Improving Reading Achievement for Middle and High School Students.

This presentation will outline and delineate 10 key instructional steps that a school must take in order to improve reading achievement in older readers and describe specific interventions necessary to achieve the instructional steps. Part II of the session will describe the current misconceptions concerning teaching reading comprehension for older students and provide specific instructional interventions to improve students' understanding of subject matter text.
