New Website Offers a Virtual Meeting Place to Support Pennsylvanians with Complex Communication Needs

New website offers a virtual meeting place to support Pennsylvanians with complex communication needs
Philadelphia, PA - "Communicate PA," a new website provides information-sharing, problem solving and raises awareness about and for individuals in Pennsylvania who have complex communication needs.
The site, communicatepa.wikispaces.com, developed by the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University with funding from Pennsylvania's Office of Developmental Programs, is part of an overall effort to unite all individuals concerned with communication rights for Pennsylvanians with intellectual disabilities, autism and other developmental disabilities that often include communication challenges.
The site is designed for everyone according to Jennifer M. Seale, Augmentative Communication Services Coordinator at the Institute on Disabilities. "We developed the resource so everyone-service providers, family members, health care providers and people with disabilities-can access information and communicate with each other in a professional, safe, yet friendly environment," Ms. Seale said.
Visitors to the site will have access to information about funding for communication services and supports including "speech generating devices", upcoming opportunities for learning about augmentative and alternative communication, policy changes, qualified providers and other resources. In addition, the site features sections for discussions and active idea sharing. Amy Goldman, Associate Director of the Institute on Disabilities and program director for Pennsylvania's Initiative on Assistive Technology (PIAT).says that this site has a great future. "We're just beginning to attract members to the site," Ms. Goldman said. "I predict a very vital and active exchange of important information to help meet the needs of Pennsylvanians with disabilities."
The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University is one of the 67 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Through training, technical assistance, services and supports, research, dissemination, and advocacy, the Institute is committed to supporting individuals with disabilities in their pursuit of interdependence, contribution, and inclusion.
