Friends -

PHILADELPHIA WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE TAXI REGULATIONS

As a result of a lawsuit filed by Steve Gold, Esquire, in July on behalf of individuals with disabilities who use wheelchairs against the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) alleging ADA violations for failing to provide wheelchair accessible taxis, the PPA has now issued draft proposed regulations to introduce wheelchair accessible taxicabs.

The regulations propose that 20%, or 300, of the 1600 existing taxicabs become accessible 90 days after the effective date of the final regulation AND 100% of taxicabs become accessible by January 1, 2016.

Below find the web link for the PPA proposed Regulations which IF APPROVED AND IF IMPLEMENTED, will result in 300 accessible taxis very quickly and 100% accessible taxis by 2016.
It is important that the PPA hear from people who support this proposal. Please send your comments to either cmilstein@philapark.org  or DWeldon@philapark.org.   Comments must be submitted before close of business on February 3, 2012.

A public comment hearing will be held on February 15, 2012 at 10:00 AM.  The location has not yet been determined, so more information will be forthcoming.

There will likely be strong opposition to these regulations by the taxi industry and they may submit a substantial number of comments in opposition!!!  Therefore, it is imperative that the disability community join together and submit comments supporting the PPA regulations.

The information in this bulletin was forwarded to DRN by Steve Gold, Esquire.  If you have any questions, please contact Steve at
stevegoldada1@gmail.com before the end of business on January 25, 2012.
