Now available: Legal Advocacy as a Tool for Social Change

On March 19, 2009, the Disability Rights Network sponsored a day-long conference to discuss "Legal Advocacy as a Tool for Social Change." More than 40 consumers and advocates gathered to hear presentations and provide their own ideas on how best to achieve social change to benefit persons with disabilities.

The three presentations have been converted into podcasts in order to allow more persons to hear some of the issues that were discussed.

"Legal Advocacy & Social Change - A Historical Change" (0:33)

In this presentation, DRN Legal Director Mark Murphy provided a brief history of legal advocacy on behalf of persons with disabilities, discussed some lessons that can be drawn from social change movements outside of the disability area, and identified barriers to using legal advocacy to achieve social change for persons with disabilities.

"Legal Advocacy & Social Change - The National View and What It Means for Pennsylvania" (1:02)

In this presentation, long-time disability rights lawyer Steve Gold discussed the issues disability activists around the country are working on to achieve social change and the lessons that can be applied by those seeking social change in Pennsylvania.

"The Elements of Successful Legal Advocacy to Achieve Social Change - It's Not Just About the Lawsuit" (1:00)

In this presentation, DRN Chief Executive Officer Ilene Shane and DRN Policy Director Linda Anthony discuss how to develop a campaign to seek social change and identify the different elements of a successful campaign, including political action, using the media, and coalition building.

DRN's conference on "Legal Advocacy as a Tool for Social Change" was made possible by the generous support of the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council.
